The meeting at the Presidential Palace on measures to modernize the policing plan has just been completed, so as not to repeat the incidents in Limassol and Chlorakas.
The five issues/decisions taken:
- The first issue discussed was security issues in relation to the events currently taking place in Israel and the measures taken by the police.
- Because migration is a priority of the Government, it was decided to strengthen the Aliens and Immigration Service in the first half of November, in order to further increase returns and deportations.
- The formation of two additional Permanent Anti-Riot Platoons in the Infantry Unit as of 6 November.
- By the end of the month, the autonomy of the Police Information Management and Utilization Service (YDAP) will be completed.
- Reorganization within the year of 24 police departments that will lead to the enhancement of its operational capability and intervention. The reorganization will also include the use on the front line of police officers who are currently exercising clerical duties.
Before the meeting, President Christodoulides requested and was informed about the measures taken by the Police in relation to the protection of Israeli interests in Cyprus.
The chief informed the President that security measures have been increased at airports and ports as well as at the Israeli embassy.
