Cyprus Police 20 October 2023
Starting Monday 09/10/2023 at the Cyprus Police Academy, the 2nd Training Program for members of the Cyprus Police, who handle "Vulnerable Persons" cases, is underway.
The purpose of the program, in which 14 members of the Police and two members of the British Bases Police participate, is the special training, information and awareness of all members working in the affected Police services and primarily in the Family Violence Scales of the District TAE, in Sub-Directorate for the Management of Cases of Vulnerable Persons (Y.D.Y.E.P.) and in Police Stations, so that they can adequately respond to incidents involving vulnerable persons.
The two-week Program was designed following consultation between the Cyprus Police Academy and the Sub-Directorate for the Management of Vulnerable Persons Cases, after taking into account, among other things, special investigative needs resulting from the establishment and operation of new police structures (Y.D.Y.E. P. and Provincial Scales of Violence), the implementation of relevant procedures, current trends and attitudes regarding the handling of victims and cases involving vulnerable persons and the recommendations of competent National, European and International supervisory authorities.
The main objectives of the program are for the participants to be able to apply in practice the provisions referred to in relevant Legislation, Police Regulations and Protocols, depending on each case, to recognize various cases of vulnerable persons and to respond accordingly, recognizing the situation, attitudes and particularities of the victims or their families, in cooperation with other Services and Organizations, which have competence in the cases in which vulnerable persons are involved.
The training focuses on victims/witnesses of violence who are children, women, persons with physical or mental disabilities, LGBTI+, as well as missing persons and children in conflict with the Law.
The training is carried out by Police officers with relevant expertise or experience (from Y.D.Y.E.P. & Y.H.E. – T.K.E., Provincial TAE) and A.A.K. trainers , as well as scientists/experts from organizations/institutions responsible for the issue such as the Association for the Prevention and Treatment of Violence in the Family (S.P.A.V.O.) – the Women's House, the Mediterranean Institute for Gender Studies, the Commission for Gender Equality in Employment and Vocational Education, as well as from academia.
It is worth noting that in the context of the specific program, the participants attended the seminar on "Safe & Together Model" organized by the Advisory Committee for the Prevention and Combating of Violence in the Family (SEPKVO), with the speaker, the expert in matters of Domestic Violence, Mr. David Mandel. The program ends today, Friday 20/10/2023.
