 Pafos Live 23 October 2023

A 29-year-old man is expected to appear before the Larnaca District Court today for immediate registration of a speeding case.

The 29-year-old was spotted, last night, by members of the Larnaka Traffic Police, driving his car on a Larnaka road, at a speed of 153 kilometers per hour, while the maximum limit at this point is 65 kilometers per hour and was arrested.

A check carried out on the vehicle documents also found that the vehicle in question has been 'deleted from the registered vehicles' since March 2023 and does not have a valid certificate of fitness.

Police arrested a 34-year-old man today to facilitate investigations into an ongoing child pornography case.

The investigation of the case began after information received through Europol that a certain user of a social media platform uploaded a video file showing child sexual abuse on the internet.

Police examinations secured testimony against the 34-year-old, on the basis of which a judicial arrest warrant was issued against him.

The 34-year-old was found yesterday in Limassol and arrested. In his possession, a mobile phone was found and confiscated as evidence.

The Larnaca Permanent Assize Court has imposed a ten-year prison sentence on a 28-year-old man from Spain, who last June attempted to import almost 14 kilos of cannabis into Cyprus.

According to the facts of the case, the 28-year-old arrived at Larnaka airport on June 10 from Barcelona, via Zurich. During the passport control, it was found that an arrest warrant was pending against him for a case being investigated by the Limassol YKAN. After checking his luggage, 15 nylon packages containing approximately 14kg of cannabis were found.

Under questioning, he said that an unknown person handed him the luggage with the drugs to Spain and that he would receive €4,000 for transporting them to Cyprus.  As a mitigating factor, the Court took into account the fact that the defendant pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of drugs with intent to supply to other persons.

The 31-year-old was found guilty, by his own admission, of attempted murder against the 42-year-old, attempted murder endangering the 6-year-old's life, conspiracy to murder and four other counts of possession and transport of a firearm, as well as possession and transportation of ammunition.

It is recalled that the attempted murder was committed on December 4, 2022 outside the home of the 42-year-old, who was shot after boarding a double-cab vehicle. The shooting wounded him and his friend's 6-year-old son, who was in the vehicle.

Police arrested the 31-year-old three days after the crime, after linking him to genetic material isolated from a mask found at the scene. After his arrest, he confessed that he was the perpetrator of the attempted murder and implicated in the case of Andreas Christou alias Kambouris, 35 years old from Sotira, who mysteriously disappeared on December 6, 2022.

The International Bird Protection Organization Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS) has accused the Cypriot hunting lobby of organising a campaign of defamation, intimidation and harassment against law-abiding environmentalists who continue to expose illegal hunting and trapping of birds.

"In the latest incident on Saturday, near Protaras, on Mount Fanos, two poachers who were illegally trapping with 255 limesticks, beat our volunteers, an English and a Dutch youth. If the WPC continues with this reckless hate campaign, it is only a matter of time until things escalate. In this case CABS and its lawyers will hold KEKK (United Cypriot Hunters Movement) and its representatives responsible for all damages incurred to members," said Alexander Heyd, CEO of CABS.

"The NGO based in Germany is thus responding to false claims made at the event where a group of hunters claimed that CABS volunteers maliciously tried to prevent them from enjoying their legal pastime in Liopetri when, in fact, the area is a known poaching hotspot full of bird trapping nets, limesticks and illegal bird imitation devices," adds CABS.

"Our team found a large illegal bird trapping area with three large nets and recently trapped birds. On their way to the trap point, a group of aggressive men with more cars blocked the environmentalists' car to block their access to the nets. The men pushed and verbally abused environmentalists until the police arrived (called by CABS) and resolved the situation. Meanwhile, another CABS team that arrived at the trapping site was confronted by a group of aggressive men who tried to collect the nets before the arrival of Game and Fauna Service officers," CABS said.

"While hunting representatives have absolutely no evidence to support their false claims, it is a verifiable fact that this autumn alone CABS investigations led authorities in Cyprus to a total of 33 confirmed cases of illegal hunting or trapping activity. More than 140 people have been convicted in the Republic of Cyprus for wildlife crimes in the last 3 years as a direct result of CABS field investigations."

"Condemning the intimidation tactics of the ECSC we reiterate our intention to work with all stakeholders, including responsible hunters, to protect Cyprus' natural heritage!" said Alexander Heyd.
