Between 9 and 15 October, a nationwide awareness and policing campaign was carried out with road checks, for hands-free driving (use of a mobile phone or other object while driving). During the campaign, 563 complaints emerged.

The campaign was conducted simultaneously and at a pan-European level, in the framework of the cooperation of the Cyprus Police with the European Traffic Police Network ROADPOL. The many complaints reveal that Cypriot drivers are addicted to using a mobile phone while driving. We pay and learn...

Members of the Anti-Poaching Unit of the MMAD, while on patrol yesterday afternoon in a village area of the Nicosia district, intercepted for inspection a truck, which was leaving the occupied areas to the free areas.

A search carried out at the rear of the truck, in a large metal tank, found a quantity of fuel (diesel), approximately 1,000 liters, while in the passenger seat, three plastic containers were found, which also contained fuel (gasoline), with a total quantity of about 100 liters.

The driver and the truck were transported to a Police Station, where Customs Officers were informed and arrived, who proceeded to issue an out-of-court settlement amounting to 5,000 euros.

The amount of money was paid by the driver, who departed from the station, while the truck was impounded by the Customs officers, until the quantity of fuel was confiscated.

Filenews

Not one, not two, but six whole years have passed since the day it was registered before the Limassol District Court, a case concerning what the plaintiffs claim was a fictitious accident that took place on the day of the Epiphany, in 2015.

The case is of great interest since the multi-page indictment includes 12 defendants including a doctor, orthopedist and physiotherapist. Those involved in the accident had demanded money from an insurance company, which commissioned an expert to investigate, as a result of which it was determined that the accident never occurred and eventually those allegedly involved were found charged.

Specifically, according to the facts, the virtual accident occurred on 6/1/2015 in Paphos with the parties involved, however, residing in Limassol. In one vehicle was the 1st defendant along with his wife and children. In the other vehicle were the other defendants. The alleged accident took place in the attempt of one driver to exit a lane and as a result stopped the path of the other vehicle coming from the right. No police were called to the scene and no person was taken to hospital.

Some of the passengers were examined the next day by the accused orthopaedic specialist and all were diagnosed with cervical problems, spinal injuries and medical reports were prepared. The rest were examined by another orthopedic surgeon and diagnosed with the exact same medical problems. In March 2015 there was a claim to an insurance company by the 2 drivers for compensation of €20,000 for vehicles and €23,000 for passengers.

The insurance company commissioned an expert to investigate the crash and then determined that the two vehicles had never been in contact with each other. In fact, in his report, the expert notes that the damage to the cars existed before. He also points out that one vehicle, due to the damage and mechanical damage, could not have been driven to the scene but may have been towed to the scene. Examinations allegedly revealed that the accident was staged in order to deceive the insurance company.

During the investigation of the case and the interrogations by the ICF Headquarters, it was found that the accused had never gone to the doctors for examination.

This case, however, tends to turn into a serial since December 2017, when the registration took place, until today, the trial has not started due to continuous postponements, changes of defense lawyers and requests for suspension of criminal prosecutions. The case was set yesterday for the start of the hearing of a new judge at the Limassol Court, but again, one of the lawyers asked for a postponement, saying that only two days ago he took over the case. At the same time, another lawyer addressed the Court, citing a long delay.

This report also brought the displeasure of the public prosecutor who has now taken up the case, indicating that the reason for the delay is due to the fact that half of the defendants changed lawyers twice, there were constant requests for postponements on the part of the latter, as well as requests for suspension of criminal prosecutions for some of the accused. In the end, the Court set the trial for mid-November.

According to "F", the indictment includes 61 charges involving all 12 defendants and includes charges of conspiracy, attempt to obtain goods by false representations, forgery, circulation of a false document.
