 Filenews 11 September 2023

The Meteorological Service has issued an orange warning for thunderstorms that are expected to affect Cyprus today.

In particular, isolated storms are expected to affect mainly the mountainous, northern areas and the eastern half of the island. The intensity of rain is expected to range between 55 and 70 millimeters per hour and hail is likely.

The warning will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Detailed weather:

Weak low pressure and unstable weather conditions affect the region.

Today the weather will soon become partly cloudy and temporarily mostly cloudy, while initially isolated rains are likely, without excluding an isolated thunderstorm, mainly on the coast. Gradually, however, local rains and isolated thunderstorms are expected, mainly in the mountains, in northern areas and in the eastern half of the island. Hail may also fall in a thunderstorm. The winds will blow mainly southwest to northwest weak to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort and in the afternoon locally moderate, 4 Beaufort. The sea will initially be calm until a little turbulent, to later become windward until a little turbulent. The temperature will rise around 32 degrees in the interior, southeast and east coasts, around 31 degrees on the rest of the coasts and around 23 degrees in the higher mountains.

Tonight the weather will gradually become mostly cloudy with medium and high clouds and locally rain is expected, while mainly in western and southwestern areas isolated thunderstorms are not excluded. The winds will blow mainly southwest to northwest and locally variable, weak, 3 Beaufort, but temporarily will blow up to moderate, 4 Beaufort. The sea will be calm until a little turbulent. The temperature will drop to around 24 degrees in the interior and on the coast and around 17 degrees in the higher mountains.

On Tuesday the weather will initially be mostly cloudy with medium and high clouds and local, mostly light, showers may occur, while isolated showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected later. On Wednesday and Thursday the weather will be mostly clear.

The temperature on Tuesday is not expected to change significantly, to remain below the average climatic values, while by Thursday it will gradually rise, to fluctuate slightly above the average climatic values.
