Following the official handover of the CUT premises in Paphos from the municipal authority to the academic institution and the official start of classes from next Monday, the attention of the Municipality of Pafos now turns to the construction of student dormitories that will serve the young people who will be studying in the city.
The Municipality announced on August 11 the tender for the construction of the student dormitories that will be erected next to the CUT on a piece of land purchased by the Municipality. The major project has a total budget of €13 million and will concern 203 flats.
The aim of the municipal authority is the completion of this project to be done under the provisions of the contracts without any time delay and other problems, in order to serve quickly and flawlessly the student community that will settle in Pafos this year as a result of the arrival of the CUT. This development makes the Municipality of Pafos the only Municipality in Cyprus that built University facilities to operate in the city and now the only one that builds its own student dormitories.
Referring to the issue, the Mayor of Pafos, Phedon Phedonos, stressed that everyone is rightly worried about the rise in rents, but the rise in all cities so far and especially in Paphos did not come from the demand from students, but from the demand from the many economic and political refugees we have moved here in recent years and from the many passport investors who have skyrocketed property prices with the main purpose of enriching themselves, in his expression.
No one talks about all this, but some are worried and criticize that rents will go up because of students, he said. In any case, the Pafos Municipality is doing its duty and building student dormitories, he concluded.
