The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Anna Koukkides-Prokopiou, took steps to suspend a prison guard in charge of the electronic surveillance system to the Public Service Commission, following the incidents on Friday night in Limassol, according to an announcement by the Department of Prisons.
According to the Department of Prisons, an administrative investigation has been ordered in relation to the case of a convict who is serving a sentence under electronic surveillance and who is among those arrested for Friday's incidents in Limassol.
According to the Department, following a preliminary check carried out by the Prison Administration, it appears that this is a prisoner who is serving a sentence of 20 months in prison, with a release date of 19.11.2023.
As of 14.08.2023, the prisoner is serving his sentence under electronic surveillance outside the Department of Prisons, with his place of residence in the Nicosia district.
According to the Department of Prisons, in June the convict had gone on leave to the Limassol district, where his mother lives, and had been placed under temporary electronic surveillance for trafficking purposes in the Limassol district.
On Friday, he was arrested in Limassol due to the incidents, while, as the Department of Prisons states in its announcement, he should be in the Nicosia district where he lives with a relative.
"An administrative investigation has been ordered to establish the reasons why the Limassol district was not removed from the permitted transit zones of the detainee in question and which would lead to the immediate activation of the system and the notification of the Department of Prisons of its own actions," the Department of Prisons announced.
Therefore, it notes that actions were taken by the Competent Authority, which is the Minister of Justice and Public Order, to the Public Service Commission, to suspend a prison guard who was responsible for operating the system.
