PAPHOS MUNICIPALITY REJECTS ALLEGATIONS OF MANIPULATION

 Pafos Live 7 August 2023

New legal dispute between the municipality and the metropolis of Pafos regarding the commitment of eight million euros from the municipality's funds for the public garden. A request by the local authority for suspension of the application of the relevant court order is heard before the Pafos District Court.

The Diocese of Pafos secured a freezing order amounting to €8,036,000, money awarded in a 2021 decision to annihilate the value of the church's property. The proposal to reduce the building ratio of the church plot from 160% to just 1% was submitted by the local authority in the 80s and ratified by the then government. The city is seeking to freeze the decree until the supreme court hears an appeal against the first instance decision or replaces the decree with other guarantees.

In today's proceedings, the municipal secretary of the municipality of Pafos, Themis Filippides, was cross-examined by the lawyers of the diocese of Pafos, who rejected as unfounded the complaint that the local authority arranged, after the issuance of the decree, to freeze money from the pension fund of the employees of the municipality, with the lawyer of the diocese Leonidas Georgiou stating unequivocally that the church has no intention of touching this money. The proceedings continue on Friday with the speeches of both sides.
