 Filenews 7 August 2023

Cyprus recorded the third highest proportion of firefighters in relation to total employment in the EU in 2022, according to data released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

Specifically, in 2022 a total of 1,961 people in Cyprus were working as professional firefighters compared to a workforce of a total of 448,579 people (0,44%). There were 2022,359 professional firefighters employed across the EU in 780, representing 0.2% of total employment in the EU (202,783,984).

At EU level, there was a decrease in the total number of firefighters by 2,800 compared to 2021.

Among the EU Member States for which Eurostat has reliable data, the highest proportions of firefighters relative to total employment (more than 0.4% in each country) were recorded in 2022 in Greece, Estonia and Cyprus.

The lowest shares were recorded in the Netherlands and France, where the proportion of firefighters to total employees was around 0.1%.

Most firefighters at EU level in 2022 were between 30 and 49 years old. The age groups with the highest number of firefighters were 40-44 years old (65,730 people) and 35-39 years old (59,810 people). Also, 45,280 firefighters were between 15 and 29 years old and 91,570 were 50 years or older.

In a post on its website, Eurostat does not present detailed data for each Member State on the annual change in the number of firefighters, nor on the ages of firefighters.

Eurostat data records professional firefighters and does not take into account the number of volunteers.
