Blood stocks in Cyprus are at breaking point, said the Head of the Blood Centre, Androulla Panayiotou, who appeals to the public to come to the Blood Donation Stations and donate blood before leaving for holidays.
According to the Head of the Blood Center, a number of stocks are currently available, however, she noted, due to the low attendance of blood donors, ahead of holidays, these stocks are "at risk".
It appeals to the public to donate blood before going on holiday so as not to disrupt security in stocks.
Panayiotou said that the need for blood is continuous, since surgeries have not stopped, while accidents have increased this time, which require several quantities of blood.
Mrs. Panayiotou stressed that blood needs are very high, so the struggle to find blood is daily.
Asked about the level of stocks at the moment, she said the safety reserve is marginal, adding that 300 bottles of blood are needed every day to cover the safety stock.
"Right now the bet is to collect 300 bottles a day," said the Head of the Blood Center, noting that "these days unfortunately we cannot meet this need."
He stressed that next week is even more difficult due to the absence of enough for holidays.
Besides, in response to a relevant question, he said that the daily attendance rate reaches around 220 blood donors.
He thanked blood donors for their response when the need arises, while urging them to go to the website of the Blood Center and see in which cities blood donations are made daily.
