A new yellow warning for high temperatures has been issued by the Meteorological Service.
According to the announcement, the maximum temperature is expected to rise to 42 degrees Celsius in the interior and 33 degrees in the higher mountains
The warning will come into effect at 11:00 am on Friday and will last until 18:00 pm today.
The weather forecast
Seasonal low pressure and hot air mass affect the area.
Today the weather will soon become clear and warm, while the atmosphere will be sparse dust from time to time. The winds will blow initially variable weak 3 Beaufort, gradually becoming mainly southwest to northwest, weak to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort and transient on the south coast in the afternoon until strong 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will be a little turbulent. The temperature will rise around 42 degrees in the interior, around 35 on the south and east coasts, around 37 on the north coast and around 33 degrees on the west coast as well as in the higher mountains.
Tonight the weather will be mostly clear, however later on there will be locally increased low clouds and sparse fog. The winds will initially blow southwest to northwest weak, 3 and locally to moderate 3 to 4 Beaufort, becoming later variable weak up to 3 Beaufort. The sea will be a little turbulent. The temperature will drop to around 23 degrees in the interior and the rest of the coasts and around 21 degrees in the higher mountains.
On Saturday the weather will be mostly clear. On Sunday, during the midday hours, developing clouds are expected to give isolated rain and an isolated thunderstorm in the mountains. On Monday the weather will be mostly clear.
The temperature will drop on Saturday and not significantly change until Monday to hover near and slightly above average climatic values.
Red alert for explosion of fires
The Department of Forests informs the public that today, Friday, July 28, 2023, the risk of explosion and expansion of forest fires will remain at "RED ALERT" level.
It is emphasized that lighting fires without permission is prohibited and that it is an offense which, according to the Forest Law of 2012, is punishable by imprisonment up to 10 years or a fine of up to €50.000,00 or both penalties together and according to the Rural Fire Prevention Law of 1988 up to 5 years or a fine of up to €20,000 or both penalties.
Lighting a fire for food preparation is allowed only in the barbecues of the picnic areas.
It also appeals to the public to be particularly careful during their excursions, completely avoiding actions and activities that may cause fire, such as the use of tools or agricultural machinery that generate heat, sparks or flame, such as emery, welding and welding.
Finally, in case someone notices smoke or fire, they are called to call immediately 1407 (Department of Forests) or 112 (Fire Service).
