The European Commission has tabled a proposal for a comprehensive reform of the European Union's customs framework to introduce database systems that will simplify procedures for traders.
The Commission's proposal will align and simplify requirements for traders, reducing the time it takes for import procedures, creating a single system across the EU and facilitating data reuse.
Under the proposal, a new EU Customs Authority would be created, which would supervise the data of the new database, as well as a single online portal where importers could log in to enter information about their products and supply chains.
The new hub will replace the electronic systems of all EU member states, saving them around €2 billion. time in operating costs.
In addition, artificial intelligence will be used to predict problems even before goods are shipped to the 27-country bloc.
