TECHNICAL PROBLEM BLOCKED THE OPERATION OF THE NEW CAMERAS

 Filenews 4 April 2023

A technical problem with the points where Traffic Police cameras were installed occurred during the tests, so they could not be put into operation immediately, as were the announcements.

"F" reports that both in the two fixed points in Limassol where cameras have been installed and would operate from the end of March, as well as in the two new points in Nicosia that would enter into operation this month, there is a technical problem and as a result they cannot operate normally at the moment. As announced by the Police, by the end of March they would operate at two junctions of Makarios Avenue in Limassol and in April at two more points in Nicosia. However, due to technical impediments they cannot operate immediately.

According to the same information, the problem is related to the fact that when the lights on which the cameras are installed turn red, it is not synchronised with the system, so when an infringement is committed it is not recorded. This, as explained to "F", is due to the old electrification system of these lights, so it now needs to be adjusted to synchronize (the lights) with the cameras. It is possible that the problem with traffic lights at the junction of Makarios Avenue with Spyrou Kyprianou and Digeni Akrita Avenues in Nicosia (Lycabettus lights) will be resolved immediately in relation to the other three points in Nicosia and Limassol.

However, as we were told, mobile cameras continue to operate without problems. There are currently eight mobile phones in operation and by the end of the month they will increase to 12. Gradually more will be received to reach the final number of 20 for 2023. Mobile cameras are installed all over Cyprus both on motorways and in cities. In Paphos there are reactions to the places where mobile cameras are placed, with citizens claiming that they are trapped. It is noted that the points where the vehicle of a private company in which a mobile camera is installed is parked, are given by the Police with instructions not to hide behind trees or other objects.

Meanwhile, there have been fewer complaints from drivers at the two new locations where fixed cameras have been operating since last month in Nicosia, which is attributed to general compliance. Cameras have operated at the junctions of Limassol Avenue and Armenias Street, as well as at Griva Digeni and Prodromou Avenues. As we were told, the complaints are as many as at the first fixed point operating in Nicosia from 1/1/2022 at the junction of Griva Digeni and Dimosthenis Severis Avenues.
