126 applicants for international protection, originating from Somalia, Afghanistan, Congo, Nigeria and Syria, departed today on the first charter flight from Cyprus to Germany, where they will be relocated.
Today's follows a series of transfers expected to take place in the coming months under the European Union's voluntary solidarity mechanism.
The special charter flight took place at 8 am.
The transfer of the 126 applicants for international protection was carried out with the cooperation of the Asylum Service of the Ministry of Interior, the European Union Agency for Asylum, the International Organization for Migration and the German authorities.
Relocation started three months ago in other Member States, such as France, Bulgaria and Romania.
The total number of relocated persons is 346, including applicants for international protection to Germany.
The European Union's voluntary solidarity mechanism programme is designed to support frontline Member States facing increased migratory challenges, through assistance from other Member States in a context of solidarity.
