The youth of the municipality of Polis Chrysochous demands the renaming of the municipality of Polis to the municipality of Akamas, justifying this position through a letter to the Minister of Interior. The letter in its entirety.
To the Honourable Minister of the Interior,
The communities of Neo Chorio, Drousia, Androlykou, Fasli and Kritou Terra, which together with others make up the New Municipality of Polis Chrysochous, are communities of the Akamas Peninsula.
Of the 193.19 km2 of the Akamas area (8 Akamas Local Plan Communities plus the Community of Kritou Terra), they occupy 113.49 km2, i.e. 58.74% of the area of Akamas.
The name of the New Municipality must identify and characterize the Municipality and its inhabitants and it is particularly important not to mislead and create confusion, but also to continue to identify the land of origin of the inhabitants of an area and their ancestors.
For the residents of the above communities who are historically identified as residents of Akamas communities, the given name is completely foreign to them and is at least annoying as it does not express them at all in relation to their place of origin. In addition, these Communities are identified as Akamas Communities in a number of Government Plans, such as the Sustainable Development Plan of the Akamas National Forest Park, the Akamas Local Plan, etc.
Given the reactions that still exist from residents and Community Councils, we ask as a Local Community not to allow a new "Macedonian Issue" to be created, and to correct the name, which as it stands today will simply be a permanent source of reactions and creates anew a feeling of injustice and contempt of the residents of the Akamas region in a new decision for them. without them again.
We therefore believe and suggest that the word AKAMAS should be part of the name of the new Municipality of Polis Chrysochous, more than the name of any other Municipality.
