Pafos Police arrested a 22-year-old man on Good Friday for illegal possession and storage of explosives.

According to an announcement by the Office of the Communication Branch of the Police Headquarters, the arrest of the 22-year-old was preceded on Good Friday afternoon by a search based on a court warrant at his home in Paphos, where explosives such as 10 improvised explosive cylindrical metal objects (tubes) and two improvised explosive cylindrical metal objects, type of factory fire extinguishers, were located and received as evidence.

Two empty factory fire extinguishers and three clear bags containing white powder (potassium) were also found.

Subsequent examinations by a pyrotechnic technician of the Pafos Police Authority revealed that all 12 cylindrical metal objects found contained an improvised mixture – gunpowder (low power explosive).

The 22-year-old was taken into custody to facilitate interrogations.

At around 2.30 p.m. yesterday, information was received about a fight between foreigners outside a premises in Nicosia.

Members of the Police went to the scene where they found two persons aged 30 and 19 to be injured. The 30-year-old reportedly told police he was attacked by a number of foreigners. An ambulance was called to the scene and transported the 19-year-old to Nicosia General Hospital where he was examined by on-duty doctors and found to have three superficial lacerations. He was stitched together and held for observation.

During the examinations at the site, a number of foreign persons went where tension was caused. In the presence of members of the Police, a 26-year-old man allegedly damaged a car that was at the scene and was arrested for a flagrant offence.

During the examinations and while the 30-year-old was at the Omorfita Police Station for the purpose of investigating the case, he attacked an 18-year-old who had previously allegedly attacked him during the incident.

The 18-year-old was arrested on a court warrant and taken into custody, while both the 30-year-old, who was also arrested, and the 26-year-old were charged in writing and released.

The Omorfita Police Station continues the examinations.

As part of the evaluation of evidence and testimonies, members of the YKAN Headquarters stopped a car driven by a 48-year-old man from the district of Larnaka for inspection in a rural area of the Nicosia district.

A search followed in the surrounding area where 11 nylon packages containing a total of about 10 kg of dry cannabis plant matter were found in various places, carefully hidden under grass. Also, various documents were received from his car for further examinations, while during the searches carried out both at his home in the district of Larnaka and at his family home in the district of Nicosia, nothing objectionable was found.

The 48-year-old was arrested and detained while the YKAN (Nicosia Unit) continues the examinations.

More than 2000 firecrackers were found by members of the Limassol OPE, following a tip-off, in an open area last night.

The examinations reportedly revealed testimony about a person against whom a court warrant was obtained and is wanted.

A mammoth fine was imposed by customs authorities on a young man from Nicosia who was caught loaded with contraband cigarettes and hookah tobacco. 

Specifically, following information, members of the police intercepted a vehicle on the Limassol-Paphos motorway at the height of Episkopi. The vehicle was driven by a 26-year-old man from Nicosia and inside it were found 933 boxes of cigarettes and hookah tobacco. 

The young man was fined €65,000 and is expected to appear in court tomorrow. 

Under questioning, he gave some allegations which are being investigated.
