YELLOW WEATHER WARNING

A yellow warning for isolated strong thunderstorms that will intermittently affect the region, initially the north, west and south coasts and gradually the rest of the regions, is in effect from Friday evening.

The intensity of the rain is expected to range between 35 and 50 millimetres per hour, while hail is likely to fall.

The warning will be in effect until 5 pm on Saturday.  In Troodos from early Saturday morning snowfall is recorded.

According to the Meteorological Service, today, the weather will be mostly cloudy and local rains and isolated thunderstorms are expected, while on the highest peaks of Troodos, snow or snow is expected to fall. In a thunderstorm, hail is very likely to fall, while the phenomena locally may be prolonged or even intense. The winds will blow mainly south to southwest and in the afternoon locally to northwest, weak to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort and in the afternoon transient to very strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will be a little turbulent. The temperature will rise to around 15 degrees inland, around 16 degrees on the coast and around 5 degrees in the higher mountains.

Tonight, the weather will remain mostly cloudy and isolated rains are expected in places, while local rains or isolated thunderstorms are expected from time to time on the west and north coasts. On the highest peaks of Troodos, sleet or snow is expected. The winds will blow mainly west to northwest, weak to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort and the sea will be a little turbulent. The temperature will drop to around 9 degrees inland, around 11 degrees on the coast and around 2 degrees in the higher mountains, where locally frost is expected to form.

On Sunday, the weather will be mostly cloudy and local rains and isolated thunderstorms are expected as well as snow or sleet locally in the higher mountains. In a thunderstorm, hail is very likely to fall, while the phenomena locally may be prolonged or even intense.

On Monday, periods of sunshine will alternate with periods of increased cloudiness, which is expected to give isolated rain or even thunderstorms. On Tuesday, the weather will be mostly clear.

On Sunday, the temperature is not expected to change significantly, remaining below the average climatic values. By Tuesday, however, a gradual rise in temperature is expected to hover on Tuesday near the average climatic values.
