RUSSIA - WILL NATIONALISE UKRAINE'S ASSETS

Filenews 3 February 2023

Russia has announced that it will nationalize "foreign" assets in annexed Crimea, including those linked to Ukrainian ownership, and channel some of the proceeds to support those fighting in Ukraine.

"The deputies of the State Council of the Republic of Crimea adopted a resolution on the nationalization of the property of foreign citizens and states that commit hostile actions against Russia," their President Vladimir Konstantinov said on social media.

The local parliament, created by Moscow after the annexation of Crimea in 2014, said the bill targets property of Ukrainian persons and businesses and that it was approved unanimously.

Konstantinov said the list of assets "includes about 500 facilities, linked to businesses and banks, tourism and sports infrastructure."

Russian news agencies said the list includes assets of the richest Ukrainian, Rinat Akhmetov, oligarch Igor Kolomoisky, around 10 Ukrainian banks, factories and the Dynamo Kiev football team.

"Part of the profits will go to support those involved in the special military operation," Konstantinov told the RIA Novosti news agency, using the Kremlin's term for the invasion of Ukraine.

The local government said authorities would share that support in part by "giving away plots of land" for free.
