Episodic was the arrest of a 24-year-old man in Limassol who went to pick up a parcel of drugs. The suspect was brought before the court yesterday which ordered his detention for a period of seven days. The 24-year-old's defence lawyer, Sotiris Zachariou, did not object to YKAN's request.
The 24-year-old in his testimony admitted involvement in the case, but claimed that the drugs were not ordered by him, but by another person. He also said he knew drugs were involved and how he acted on behalf of another whom he did not name.
According to the facts of the case, on January 30, YKAN was informed by a customs officer that there was a quantity of cannabis in a paper package arriving in Cyprus from America. Members of the agency went to the scene for on-the-spot examinations where it was found that the package contained three packages of packages one inside the other, while in the latter there were 100 plastic cylindrical containers with the inscription "Zushi yellow" which each contained a factory cigarette with a quantity of cannabis. The tests found that the cannabis had a total weight of 400 grams.
The recipient of the package was the name of the 24-year-old. A controlled delivery was subsequently made and the drugs were received as evidence. On Thursday, the 24-year-old went to the post office to pick up the package as it happened. Upon leaving the premises, an attempt was made to stop him but the 24-year-old tried to escape but lost his balance and fell into the street.
The investigators of the Limassol YKAN in cooperation with the Customs and the Post Office are investigating the course followed by the drug package from America until its introduction into the Republic.
