Uzbekistan has for the first time sent a cargo of copper to Europe via a new rail route bypassing Russia, Uzbekistan's state-owned railway company announced on Monday, as part of Tashkent's plan to maintain trade ties with the European Union.
The train will deliver 46 wagons and 91 container units with copper concentrate from the Almalyk mining and metallurgical combination in Bulgaria, the announcement said.
The route, known as the "Middle Corridor", crosses Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Georgia, as well as the Caspian and Black Seas with the help of waterways.
Brussels has promoted the Middle Corridor as an alternative to the traditional route from the north for Europe-Asia rail transport, which runs through Russia.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) said last month that it was ready to invest billions of euros in developing freight routes between Europe and Asia that bypass Russia.
