 Filenews 12 December 2022

The President of the Republic proceeded today to sign the legislation voted in Parliament on the issue of sex education, taking into account international conventions and contractual obligations of the Republic, while also signing the legislation to extend the suspension of foreclosures.

An announcement by the Presidency states that President Anastasiades, without ignoring the correctness of the Attorney General's opinion, nevertheless took into account: First, the contractual obligations of the Republic of Cyprus as they derive from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Abuse, which explicitly provide for the state's obligation to provide information to children in primary and secondary education on the risks of sexual abuse and exploitation.

Secondly, that the legislation in question meets the above contractual obligations of the Republic, without interfering in any way with the material competence of the Minister of Education to plan, determine the syllabus and/or the timetable.

The President of the Republic also proceeded to sign the legislation to extend the period of suspension of foreclosures, the announcement concludes.
