Paediatric clinics all across Cyprus remain full with mainly infants and children up to five years of age suffering with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), Philenews reports.
However, the epidemic which broke out in mid-September has started to give way to influenza that has now also hit Cyprus – just like in the wider region of Europe.
Influenza has made its presence much earlier this year compared to previous ones. And this has led to the slow – albeit in very early stages – coexistence of coronavirus, RSV and influenza.
The number of cases of respiratory infections recorded daily in Cyprus is generally at high levels, according to specialists.
At present, they mainly concern the most vulnerable – that is, children and the elderly – but experts believe this will continue.
And, at least for influenza and coronavirus, a worsening of the situation is expected in the coming period with a spread across all age groups.
To this end, the Ministry of Health is also preparing to set up shortly a network of personal doctors for adults and children aiming to ensure the proper surveillance of Covid-19, RSV and influenza.
