The election process for the appointment of a new Archbishop will follow the death of Archbishop Chrysostomos II on Monday morning.
According to the Statute of the Church, this process is carried out in two stages: a) The formation of the 'three-person', by universal suffrage, and b) the election of the Archbishop by the Holy Synod.
In accordance with Article 23, on the date fixed by the Surveyor in the circular sent, elections shall be held by universal secret ballot to establish the three-person stage. All Orthodox Christians, over the age of eighteen, have the right to vote, those who have been permanently residing in Cyprus for at least one year and are registered in the electoral list of voters, which is approved by the Holy Synod.
Within five days, from the end of the deadline for the submission of objections, the Holy Synod is convened by the Rector, makes a final decision on them and then proceeds to the validation of the results and the preparation of the three-person body, by the three persons who voted in the majority. In the event of a tie, a draw is held during the session of the Holy Synod. Within three days of the preparation of the tripartite meeting, the Holy Synod is convened by the Archbishop for the election of the Archbishop.
The archbishop is elected by the three-person who gathered the absolute majority of the members of the Holy Synod. If this is not achieved, the vote is repeated, in the same session of the Holy Synod, between the two persons, who were in the majority, and the Archbishop is elected the one who receives the most votes. In the event of a tie, a draw shall be held.
