Gradually, the new cameras of the Traffic Police will be received so that the drivers can get used to the points and the system can absorb the new complaints.
Already in three of the six points included in the second phase of the system, the cameras have been installed and the company has started a trial. When everything will be settled and there will be no problem with the recording of violations, one by one the points will be received by the contractor which is the Department of Electromechanical Services. This is what the deputy director of the Department Markos Markou told "F", adding that before the cameras are put into operation at one point, the Police will give the necessary warning to the drivers so that they can be informed about it and take the necessary driving measures.
Regarding the timing of the second phase of the photo-tagging system, Mr. Markou said that based on the contract, this should be done by the end of January 2023. But he explained, the cameras may be gradually picked up at the six new points when the company is ready to deliver them. At the moment, cameras have been installed and operate in the following locations in Nicosia:
- At the intersection of Strovolos Avenue with Machaira Street near Pepsi Cola
- At the intersection of Griva Digeni and Prodromou Avenue
- At the intersection of Limassol Avenue and Armenia Street.
Regarding the installation of two cameras at the intersection of Archbishop Makarios Avenue with Digeni Akrita Avenue and Spyrou Kyprianou (Lycabettus lights), the cameras have not yet been installed, as in the two fixed points in Limassol which will be:
- At the intersection of Archbishop Makarios III Avenue and Archbishop Leontios I.
- At the intersection of Archbishop Makarios III Avenue and Agia Zoni Avenue.
The first four fixed cameras were installed in Nicosia and specifically at the intersection of Griva Digeni Avenue with Dimosthenis Severis Avenue.
It is noted that in addition to the fixed cameras, another 16 mobile ones will come in the first phase, a total of 20. The cameras have already been received by the company and after being tested they will be handed over to the Electromechanical Company to deliver them in turn to the Police. To date, 130,000 drivers have been reported from the four fixed and four mobile cameras, from which more than 80,000 extrajudicial cameras have been sent.
Regarding the third and final stage, 66 more fixed cameras will be installed in Larnaca, Paphos and on country roads. It is noted that the points where the cameras are installed are selected by the Traffic Police after taking into account the frequency of road accidents and whether high speeds can be developed.
