The construction works of the Limassol Sports History Museum begin in 2023, at the old stadium of the GSO, with the Limassol Municipality expecting the delivery of the project by the end of 2024.
According to an announcement by the Municipality, at a meeting at the Limassol Municipal Hall, the architectural plans were presented by the responsible architect of the project Margarita Danou as well as the museological study by the historian Loukas Grigoriadis.
According to the plan, the ground floor will host historical relics from the field of football and on the first floor exhibits related to classical sports. The museum will host exhibits on the athletic history of the GSO, from 1899 until 1975, when it moved to the Tsirio Stadium.
The cost of the project will amount to around €1 million and will be financed by the funds of the Limassol Municipality and sponsorships, while within the next three months the Limassol Municipality proceeds with the announcement of tenders. Construction works are expected to begin in 2023 and will be completed by the end of 2024.
The Mayor of Limassol, Nikos Nikolaidis, referred to the importance of the project especially for the youth, as he said, we intend as Limassol Municipality, "to utilize the museum so that the new generation can go and visit it and come into contact with people who wrote history".
At the end of the presentation of the architectural plans and the museological study, the Scientific Director of the Pattichion Municipal Museum, Historical Archive and Limassol Studies Centre, Mimis Sophocleous, took the floor, who made reference to the scientific study, the historical research and the needs of the new museum of our city.
The contributors of the project invite all citizens and veterans to assist in the effort to collect historical relics.
