DEBATE ON RAILWAYS AND TRAMS ON CYPRUS HAS BEGUN

 Filenews 10 October 2022

For the first time, the issue of the creation of a railway in Cyprus and the prospects for its co-financing were raised before the European Commissioner for Transport Adina Valean herself, on the occasion of her visit to the island for the conference "Maritime Cyprus 2022".

As mentioned by the Minister of Transport, Yiannis Karousos, in the context of a press conference that was hosted after a joint meeting with Mrs. Valean and the Deputy Minister of Shipping, Vassilis Dimitriadis, this is the first time that the issue of the creation of a railway and tram in Cyprus is raised at such a high level.

"There are the studies and quite good preparatory work has been done, while we know that with a light rail the main cities of Cyprus and the airport can be united," he said and added that "we are also discussing ways to co-finance this project because now we have to take steps forward".

This project, he continued, is the next step in dealing with the traffic problem but also the high cost of transportation that has been brought about by the increased cost of energy and indicated that "based on the studies we have, it can be installed within the network of highways that we have".

Today, Mr. Karousos stressed, "the door has opened, we have taken the first step and of course we will do everything possible now to promote and secure the necessary co-financing from various European funds that exist".
