With 613 votes in favour, 8 against and 13 abstentions, the European Parliament today approved the proposal for a common charger for electronic devices.
With the proposal by Autumn 2024, usb type-C will be the common charging port for all mobile phones, tablets and cameras in the EU.
The new legislation aims to make EU products more sustainable, reduce e-waste and make life easier for consumers.
Laptops should be implemented with these rules by 2026. It is estimated that with this legislation consumers will save up to 250 million per year from unnecessary purchases of chargers.
Finally, it is estimated that chargers that are either thrown in the trash, or are never used, represent about 11,000 tons of electronic waste annually.
