PROTEST AT THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE ABOUT ANIMAL WELFARE

Filenews 13 September 2022 - by Angelos Nicolaou

An event protesting against the non-implementation of the legislation on the protection and welfare of animals is planned by the Voice for Animals of Cyprus (Union of Animal Welfare Organizations of Cyprus) on October 1st. As he says, the problems related to the protection and welfare of animals are increasing daily and afflicting both the animals and thousands of volunteers who take care of them, but also society in general. They point out that the recent incidents with Berton and the injury of a child by stray dogs, tragically showed the inadequacy of the competent authorities.

This situation cannot continue any longer, notes the Voice for the Animals of Cyprus and decided in protest to call a mobilization – protest event outside the Presidential Palace on October 1 at 5:00 p.m. and to forcefully demand that immediate measures be taken and that this unacceptable situation be stopped.

Specifically, animal welfare organizations require the following:

- Immediate and full implementation of legislation on the protection and welfare of animals, without discounts.

- To carry out training programs for all persons who staff the competent services responsible for the implementation of the legislation

- To carry out programs to manage the presence of strays (dogs and cats). To implement effective cat sterilization programs and to provide substantial strengthening of shelters and proper detention facilities for strays.

- Strengthen the legislation to overcome weaknesses that have emerged in its implementation.

- Strengthen the existing protocol and implement it.

- Creation of an Animal Control and Protection Service.

The Voice invites all animal welfare organizations, groups and volunteers involved in the protection and welfare of animals to a meeting on Saturday, September 17, at 5:00 p.m. at the Vasiliki Center in Choirokoitia to co-organize the mobilization. In this way they want to honour the international day for animals which is on October 4.
