WITH THE HELP OF CITIZENS, TWO DRUNK DRIVERS WERE TAKEN OFF THE ROAD

Two men aged 58 and 38 were spotted by the Police, following information from citizens, driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to a written announcement of the Communication Office of the Police Headquarters, it is stated that "at around 5.10 in the afternoon of Sunday, July 31, after the information of a citizen, a car that was moving on the Ayia Napa - Larnaca highway was stopped for inspection by members of the Police in the area of Rizoelia. It was found that the driver of the vehicle was a 58-year-old resident of Nicosia, who tested positive in a preliminary breathalyzer test."

The man underwent a final alcohol test, with a lower reading of 76mg%, instead of 22mg%. The 58-year-old was transferred to the Aradippou Police Station where he was charged in writing, while today he is expected to appear before the Larnaca District Court for the trial of the case.

Even around six o'clock on Sunday afternoon in the area of Aleppoiana, members of the OPOD stopped, after relevant information from citizens, a car moving on the Limassol - Nicosia highway.

The driver of the vehicle was a 38-year-old resident of Nicosia, who tested positive in a preliminary alcohol test and was taken to the Pera Chorio Police Station, where he underwent a final test with a lower reading of 59mg% instead of 22mg%.

The 38-year-old was fined out of court for the offence of driving under the influence of alcohol and then released.

It is added that "driving under the influence of alcohol is one of the main causes of fatal and serious road collisions. For this reason, police checks, throughout the road network, to identify drivers who have consumed alcoholic beverages are daily".

It is noted that "during the weekend the members of the Police, in all the provinces, carried out a total of more than 1100 alcohol checks on drivers who were moving on the road network. Of these, 107 drivers tested positive and were reported by the Police."
