STRICTER MEASURES TO REDUCE SPEED RECOMMENDED BY EXPERTS

Filenews 22 August 2022 - by Michalis Hadjivassilis

Australian experts who came to Cyprus in 2019 and participated in a Road Safety workshop, recommended very strict measures to reduce the phenomenon of speeding, which is the main cause of road collisions.

Experts from the Monash University Accident Research Centre in Australia, in a report suggested the following:

• Increase policing and technology used to control speed.

• Balanced use of overt and covert policing.

• Provision of increased resources for the implementation of measures for policing and speed limitation.

• Use of traffic cameras to control traffic violations. Lowering the tolerance threshold to the minimum possible extent and applying adequate penalties for road traffic offences.

• Revision of the speed limits on specific roads, based on the risk of causing road collisions and with the aim of reducing the risk of collisions at these points.

• Implementation of additional measures to reduce speed, such as curvatures and other traffic recession measures.

• Involvement of local authorities in the whole effort.

• Increase public awareness in order to highlight the importance of strict adherence to the speed limit and how much this contributes to the reduction of fatal and serious injuries.

In particular, it was suggested that a very low tolerance limit for speeding should be applied, that mobile cameras should be used without any visible signs on the vehicles and that the controls for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs should be increased.
