 Filenews 27 August 2022

The arrest of a 40-year-old man yesterday afternoon, who allegedly deliberately hit with the car he was driving, a 54-year-old man, on a road in the Famagusta district. The 40-year-old tourist from the UK was arrested later yesterday, at Larnaca airport, where he had gone to depart from Cyprus.

According to the evidence under investigation, at around 3.45 on Friday afternoon, while a 54-year-old man was driving a motorcycle on a road in Paralimni, with his wife as a passenger, he tried to enter a right lane, where, however, he realized that a rental car was irregularly stopped in the right lane of the carriageway, instead of in the left lane.  In the attempt of the 54-year-old to move sideways to avoid the car, the driver of the car began to gesture.

The 54-year-old asked for an explanation from the driver of the car, who exited his vehicle and with a gesture, raising his fists, provoked in a duel the 54-year-old, who got off his motorcycle. Then the driver of the car returned to his vehicle and driving it backwards, allegedly tried to hit the 54-year-old, without succeeding. Soon after, however, he allegedly drove his car forward at speed and hit the 54-year-old in the legs, as a result of which he fell to the ground and was injured.

The suspected driver of the car left the scene with his vehicle, while the 54-year-old went to Famagusta General Hospital for medical examinations. As it was found, he had abrasions and bruises to various parts of his body and, after receiving treatment, he was discharged.

From the examinations carried out by members of the Police, it was found that the car had been rented by the 40-year-old suspect. He went to Larnaca airport, around 8.00pm on Friday, to depart from Cyprus. After being checked by members of the Police, a judicial warrant was then obtained for his arrest, on the basis of which he was arrested and detained for the purpose of investigating a case of negligent and reckless acts, reckless and dangerous driving, assault with actual bodily harm, and abandonment of a scene of a car accident without assistance.

The case is being investigated by the Paralimni Police Station.
