The mercury, which has climbed up to 40 degrees Celsius in recent days, is expected that not only will it not descend to cooler levels soon, but on the contrary it will rise even higher. Another week of kiln – at least – is waiting for us, according to the forecasts of the Meteorological Service.
Its director, Kleanthis Nikolaidis, told "F" yesterday that the eastern Mediterranean region is affected by hot air mass, resulting in temperatures of 39-40 degrees Celsius being recorded on the island in recent days.
Precisely because of the high temperatures, as Mr. Nikolaidis indicates, the risk of fires is great, which is why yellow warnings are issued and the public is called upon to be particularly careful when they go out into the mountains and, in addition, not to use spark-producing tools when carrying out work near the forests. "A single spark that can reach up to ten metres away from the point where work is being done, is enough to turn an entire forest into ashes," he says. Similarly, care should be exercised in the disposal of cigarette butts and matches.
Today, however, we will have a warm day, but also a warm night, he says.
However, a yellow warning has been in force since last night and will last until 18:00 for high temperatures which in the interior are expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius
