DRUNK DRIVER NEARLY HIT POLICE OFFICER

During the traffic checks in Limassol and while a member of the Police was carrying out a check on a motorcycle with modifications, a member of the Limassol traffic police was in danger of being hit by a van type vehicle, which violated a red traffic light. The driver of the vehicle was stopped and in the final alcohol test he underwent, the reading was 115μg% instead of 22μg%.

In the context of preventing road collisions, combating the phenomenon of nuisance and consolidating the sense of road safety, members of the Traffic Police carried out traffic checks nationwide during which a total of 12 motorcycles of large displacement and one car were seized. A stolen motorcycle was also identified, while the checks made 530 complaints about various traffic violations, of which 252 concerned a speed limit violation.

Specifically, during the traffic checks carried out by motorcyclists of the "Z" group of the Limassol Traffic Police, between the hours of 6 p.m. yesterday – 5 a.m. today, in the city of Limassol, as well as in places where in the past there had been fatal road collisions and nuisance, 9 motorcycles of large displacement were seized (most of them with modifications, while one of them was found abandoned with falsified registration numbers) and a car, while a stolen motorcycle was identified and a total of 45 complaints were made about various traffic offenses. Another 82 complaints were made by members of the Limassol Traffic Police in the context of traffic checks yesterday, of which 47 were for violation of the speed limit.

Also, as part of the checks in Limassol, a motorcycle was found, which was driven at a speed of 94 km / h instead of 50km / h. Its driver failed to stop at a police signal, while he was later located and called to the Limassol Traffic Police. The driver is being investigated for offences of disobedience to a policeman's signal, exceeding the speed limit, driving a motorcycle without a safety certificate, without a driver's license, without a  road license and while the bike was 'immobilized'.

Moreover, 200 complaints about various traffic offences arose from traffic police checks carried out from 6 am yesterday until 6 am today, members of the Special Motorcyclists' Unit (E.O.M.O.) and the Road Accident Prevention Units (OPAD) on the highways and on the secondary road network nationwide. Of the complaints made, 117 concerned driving at a speed beyond the permitted limit.

In addition, in the context of the traffic checks carried out from 10am yesterday until 5am today, in the city of Paphos and on the secondary road network by motorcyclists of group "Z" and members of the Paphos Traffic Police, 70 complaints were made about various traffic offenses, of which 25 were for exceeding the speed limit, while three motorcycles were retained for further inspection.

In the districts of Larnaca and Famagusta, during the traffic checks carried out from 6am yesterday until 6am today, 133 complaints were made about various traffic violations, of which 60 were for driving at a speed beyond the permissible limit.

The targeted checks of the traffic police continue daily throughout the road network nationwide. The sole aim is to consolidate road awareness and to prevent and reduce serious and fatal road collisions.
