LEFKARA SUFFERS LARGE LOSS OF WATER - AGEING SUPPLY SYSTEMS

Filenews 6 June 2022 - by Natasha Christoforou

Ten tons of water per hour were lost, for an unknown period of time, in the Municipality of Lefkara, due to a leak that could not be perceived. In recent months, the services of the municipality had found a loss of water that reached 60%-70% of the daily quantity received by Lefkara.

After the actions of the Water Department and the Water Supply Council of Nicosia, as the mayor of Lefkara, Sophocles Sophocles Sophocleous, reported to "F", a major damage was found to a central pipe, causing a leak of 240 tons per day.

"They made huge efforts and found a fault that could not be detected, since the leak was not visible anywhere. No one knows if this leak was for months or for years, but we know and we found technically that the deficit reached 60%-70%."

The leak, which was repaired a few days ago, was caused by roots of trees that penetrated into the pipe. "We don't know if this damage was for months or even years, nor if we will have a similar problem in the future. What we found is that for every ten euros we buy water, six to seven of them, is the loss, according to the statistics maintained by the municipality. That's a huge cost."

Lefkara, as Mentioned by Mr. Sofokleous, is not the only area facing problems of water loss, since due to the "aging" irrigation system leaks are recorded in dozens of municipalities and communities with damages amounting to many millions of euros. "The bad water supply system is one of the most serious problems facing our country. Every year, both the Auditor General and the local authorities observe a huge water deficit in a country that is suffering from a lack of rainfall.

He also added that the State should take responsibility for the management of water supply systems throughout Cyprus and plan their gradual replacement.
