The blood tax paid this year by foreigners on the asphalt is heavy. With the fatal accident the day before yesterday involving, it seems, a European citizen, the number of foreigners killed this year in traffic accidents is nine out of a total of 15 deaths.
This is an unprecedented number that has not been recorded in recent years, a fact that worries the Traffic Department at the Police Headquarters which is expected to readjust its plans, in order to emphasize this category of road users.
The last victim on the asphalt was a pedestrian attempting to cross a highway at dawn and was hit by a passing bus, resulting in his death being instantaneous. So far, he has not been identified, although he has been found in possession of some evidence referring to a European citizen. In particular, a passport and an ID card were found in a bag, but no one has searched for him, nor has he been declared a missing person.
The Police have contacted an embassy of a European country to search for any of his relatives to be asked whether he was in Cyprus and at the same time to give a sample of genetic material in order to identify with the deceased. At the same time, the Police invite anyone who knows anything to contact the nearest police station.
The fact that 60% of the dead from road traffic collisions are foreigners, is considered to have rung a warning bell for the Traffic Police, in view of the summer season and the arrival of tourists. This data has not been recorded before, i.e. most of the victims on the asphalt are foreigners, a fact that is being studied in order to establish the causes of each case individually. Just three days ago, a Greek had lost his life in a car accident in the area of Platres, when his truck overturned, leaving a child and a pregnant wife.
The Traffic Police proceeds to an analysis of each of the fatalities and accordingly readjusts its plans, guiding the points where the mobile cameras will be placed.
