A project of primary importance for the recycling sector concerning the construction of a large composting and composting plant for the dehydrated sludge, produced by the wastewater treatment plant of the Sewerage System of Paralimni and Ayia Napa, was approved by the Department of Environment.
The plant, which will additionally process organic residues of hotels and restaurants in famagusta district, will be built near the Paralimni-Ayia Napa Wastewater Treatment Plant, northwest of the Cape Greco area. The cost of the project is estimated at €6.5 million for mud installations and another €6 million for organic residues.
Approving the project, the Department of Environment stressed that not only is it not environmentally harmful, but its operation will contribute to the rational management of waste on the basis of the circular economy. It is noted that the quantities of mud produced today end up in fields mainly in the areas of Athienou and Koshi.
The composting-composting plant will process 10 thousand tons per year and during the summer season, it will be able to process 20-25 tons of organic residues daily from the hotels and restaurants of the area. As estimated, composted material of almost 7 thousand tons per year will be produced from the sludge treatment and about 4 thousand tons from the organic residues.
The main use of the final product is soil improvement in crops. The material will, however, be suitable for active mining activities, for the filling and rehabilitation of quartzes whose exploitation has been completed or for soil remediation work in inactive mines, quarries and mines. In addition, it can be used in road construction projects and specifically on the slopes of trenches or embankments, for the development of vegetation.
