New entry holes from the Green Line in Nicosia have been found by the various networks that migrants and refugees pass through for a fee, in order to seek asylum from an EU member state.
Yesterday morning, a Police patrol spotted Afghan migrants and after a chase managed to arrest two of the five. According to information provided by "F", members of the Police who are in charge of fighting the crime, located at 1.40 yesterday morning, a rental vehicle on Larnakos Avenue in the area of Aglantzia in which five persons were on board. The police asked the driver to stop, but he developed speed and started racing through the streets of Nicosia.
At some point the vehicle with the five youths was spotted despite the Kolokasi opening, where at the sight of the police they abandoned it and began to run in various directions. Two of the five occupants were arrested by the members of the Nicosia Police Department and it was found that they were a 22-year-old and a 24-year-old - both from Afghanistan. The two reported that they came to the occupied territories via Turkey and crossed into the free areas from a point of the counter-faction line in Nicosia.
The two foreigners said they were political refugees and their purpose was to seek political asylum. The investigation of the case was undertaken by members of the Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department who are investigating against the two cases of conspiracy and aiding and trafficking in the Republic of third-country nationals. Yesterday, the two were brought before the Nicosia District Court which issued an eight-day detention order against them. The other three who were in the vehicle are also being searched for.
Investigations are underway to determine where the vehicle was rented from and who rented it, while information from "F" reports that yesterday an arrest warrant was issued for a third party related to the case.
Our country faces a huge problem with migratory flows and that is why it proceeds to electronic monitoring of the Green Line, in combination with the recruitment of contracted special police officers who will supervise it and the efforts for returns of those who are here illegally.
