An unprecedented case has been registered at the Nicosia Assize Court against a Greek Cypriot lawyer, who is now facing serious charges.
The person in question appropriated an amount in excess of 250,000 euros by fraudulent representations, money which had been awarded as compensation to a client in a case of a serious traffic accident.
In other words, he deceived the complainant - a Romanian national - by telling him that they had lost the case in court. In fact, the victim had been vindicated and the money awarded by the insurance company as compensation, ended up in his lawyer's pocket.
Light on the case began to fall in 2017. During the year in question, the complainant made a complaint to the Police against his lawyer at the time, after he had realized after a personal investigation that the latter had lied to him regarding the judicial outcome of the case.
The Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department, which was in charge of investigating the case five years ago, issued an arrest warrant against the lawyer in question, who at the time had not been identified.
He was to be arrested five years later and even abroad. Specifically, he was arrested by the German authorities on the basis of red notice via Interpol.
According to what a competent police source reported yesterday, the necessary procedures were followed and on 31/03/2022 his extradition to Cyprus was implemented and at the same time he was arrested.
Within the next 10 days and specifically on 08/04/2022, a case against him was registered at the Assize Court of Nicosia. The lawyer in question, in fact, following a decision of the court, will be in custody until the trial is heard.
The accused faces charges related to the offences of (1) forgery, (2) circulation of a forged document, (3) securing goods by false representations, and (4) money laundering.
It should be noted that although the accused practiced the profession of lawyer, however, as we found out, his name is no longer included in the register of members of the Cyprus Bar Association.
