5,714% INCREASE IN COCAINE - SHOCKING YKAN DATA

Filenews 18 May 2022 - by Michalis Hadjivasilis

The data this year on cases and drug seizures are shocking, following the strikes against the networks by YKAN. The tremendous increase in demand has stepped up efforts to import drugs, with the Anti-Combat Service delivering heavy blows to traffickers. Minors were not spared from the fabric of drugs, since in one year 60 persons aged 14-18 years were identified, either as victims of traffickers, or as users, or even as small traffickers.

Indicative of the tragic and at the same time alarming situation, according to YKAN data, is the fact that in the first four months of 2022 there is an increase in the quantities of cocaine seized by 5,714%, something that has never been recorded before. That is, from 149 gr. which were seized in the same period last year, reached eight kilograms and 664 g. this year. An 84% increase is also recorded in cannabis seizures, while for the first time in several years, YKAN police officers located a kilogram and 650 g. of the drug 'sleepwalk', one of the most hallucinatory drugs.

According to the commander of YKAN, Michalis Katsounotos, this year there is an increase in stimulant and hallucinogenic substances, in addition to the traditional drugs, such are cannabis.

As he stated in "F", the increase in seizures is due to the intense activity of the members of YKAN as well as to the better evaluation and analysis of the information. Great emphasis has been placed with stricter controls at the gates of entry to the Republic (airports, ports, marinas and barricades).

Characteristic of the situation with the repeated blows against drug dealers is that in six hours the day before yesterday, six persons were arrested in three cases and 8.5 kilograms of cannabis and two and a half kilos of cocaine were seized. Due to the tremendous demand and supply that exists this year due to the relaxation of the measures by the pandemic, YKAN is in close contact with the Authority against Addictions, in order to study the new data and if necessary to adjust the strategic plan against drugs.
