In the battle for a safer road network in Cyprus, the new Integrated On Board Radar System, installed in vehicles of Police Traffic Departments, has been in use since last weekend. In the first weekend of its operation, only by the Traffic Police Headquarters Department, using the OB, more than 100 complaints about speed limit violation were made.
According to the Police, the number of complaints about traffic violations, perfectly demonstrates the magnitude of the safety problem on our roads. It also demonstrates the absolute need to change our mentality as road users, but also the need to intensify traffic controls and further improve the way they are carried out. In this context, the use of modern technology, such as the OBR system, by the Police, in the conduct of traffic control, is included in this context.
What is On Board Radar
The On Board Radar is essentially an electronic system for recording and controlling speed, which is installed both in patrol boats bearing police signals, as well as in police vehicles, without insignia. "Smart and practical, it provides the ability to maximise the number of checks, while providing greater security for the police officers, who carry out the check, but also for the occupants of the vehicles, who are being checked."
The speed control system works both at the time the police vehicle is in motion, and when it is static. It has the ability to record the speed of vehicles in front of or follow the police vehicle, as well as vehicles moving in the opposite direction.
"As it is understood, through the OBR system, as well as other intelligent systems of the Police, the aim is to intensify controls on the roads, with the aim of instilling in drivers a more correct road behaviour. The aim is to reduce as much as possible those traffic offences, which are proven to be the main causes of fatal and serious road collisions, as is the violation of the speed limit.
