The Party for the Animals of Cyprus is against any form of commercial and other exploitation of animals wherever it comes from.
In a statement, the party said that, approaching Easter, they wish to inform "correctly and honestly" the citizens regarding the festive days of Easter (as well as Christmas or other holidays) that the following "are unnecessary practices", which, according to the Party for Animals, should not be carried out by Municipalities and Communities, or by other citizens:
- Organisation of events and games involving animals: the use of animals for the sole purpose of human entertainment is an unacceptable form of abuse of animals.
- Donkey races: suffering, ill-treatment, nuisance and teasing are a form of abuse. Let us imitate and honour the love and respect that Christ showed towards the donkeys, which were by necessity the main means of transport at that time.
- Lotteries and games where animals such as sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, bunnies, etc. are drawn.
- Offer as a gift to children, or adults, chicks – live chickens, bunnies, pigs, pigeons, etc.: animals are not objects to be given away as a gift. Animals have needs and require conscious choice for their acquisition.
- Offer of red eggs or egg races: It is a pity to miss the opportunity for a chicken's life simply for the fun of people.
Moreover, as the party's announcement points out, it is also important for the preservation of human health to "end the illegal slaughter of animals in the backyard" (although we generally disagree with any slaughter and its complete ban).
Finally, through its announcement, the party sends the message that "Easter is not a holiday from which we take the opportunity to torment, exploit or send various animals to the pyre. Easter is a celebration of love and respect and as such we should celebrate it. What, then, is the best way to honour with reverence these holy days? By abusing animals for our own entertainment? Animals like us are god's creatures and are NOT disposable objects - they feel pain, fear, thirst, hunger, cold, heat, and lack of freedom."
"Let us go through these holy days (and any other days of the year) as bloodless without 'sacrifices', without martyrdom against animals, and let us extend the cycle of love, respect, and compassion for all kinds and creations of God."
