Filenews 6 April 2022 - by Dora Christodoulou

The Pafos Region Tourism Development and Promotion Company attended the inaugural meeting for the EU U-Mar Project held in Sicily, with the aim of enhancing underwater archaeology.

This project will address issues of enhancing underwater archaeology to become an innovative tool for the development of sustainable and creative tourism. The partners, in addition to Cyprus, come from Spain, Italy, Portugal and Croatia. The project is expected to absorb funds of €300,000 of which the Pafos ETAP accounts for actions amounting to €40,000.

A relevant announcement states that for the Pafos ETAP, the approval of this proposal is an important development since the promotion of Cypriot underwater archaeology is in very early stages, but with a fairly wide margin of action.

"Through the program, the opportunity for training in the subject will be given, international best practices are expected to be studied and the examination of possibilities for the emergence and stimulation of underwater archaeological sites for a more responsible and sustainable way", the announcement stressed.

Etap expects that in the coming years underwater archaeology may be another important element of diversification of Pafos as a tourist destination. There are several points of underwater archaeological interest in the province that can be explored, developed and further promoted, the agency concludes.
