DEVELOPMENTS IN APRIL FOR AL JAZEERA REVELATIONS

Filenews 2 April 2022 - by Michalis Hadjivasilis

In April there will be developments around the case being investigated for the former Speaker of the Parliament Dimitris Syllouris and others, in relation to the al Jazeera network revelations. The study of the voluminous file by a special team of the Legal Service under the guidance of the Assistant Attorney General Savvas Angelidis, is in its final stage, according to statements by the Attorney General George Savvidis and any decisions taken will be announced. Information from "F" indicates that the case will be brought before a Court unless unexpected and that the indictments are currently being drawn up. However, the last word rests with the Attorney General who will give the green light to prosecutions or decide something else.

In parallel with this case, the Legal Service is studying, in cooperation with the Police, two other cases concerning naturalizations of foreign investors, as well as three cases that have been completed regarding The Cooperative. As it goes without saying, in the coming period there will be decisions on a series of cases of a financial nature that either derive from the Kalogirou report or from the Arestis report, for the Cooperative.

The day before yesterday, the Attorney General regarding the case of the former Speaker of the House, said that the relevant file has been in the Legal Service for a few weeks now. "It was a case that had several issues and difficulties that had to be handled. Its detailed and thorough examination, under the instructions of the Assistant Attorney General and the team of lawyers who handle it, proceeds rapidly and normally. I understand that we are in the final stage of making final decisions.

Asked if criminal responsibilities arise, Mr. Savvidis replied that "it would not be responsible on my part to place myself in something on which a decision has not yet been taken by the Legal Service". As for when there will be announcements, he said that the investigation necessarily had to take a long time, which unfortunately cannot be easily understood by the average citizen. "The proper investigation was carried out by the Police and several times they came to us for guidance on how to deal with serious and possibly new problems that were presented. The investigation is over, the file came to our Office and for some weeks now a thorough study has been carried out by a specialized team of the Criminal Sector of the Legal Service, under the Assistant Attorney General and it is a matter of completing the study in order to make the final decisions, which we will announce", remarked Mr. Savvidis.
