More than 300 traffic violations were detected and reported during an inspection operation carried out today throughout Cyprus, by members of the Traffic Police Headquarters. The 71 complaints about speed limit violations, the 42 complaints about non-use of a seat belt by drivers and vehicle passengers, the 34 complaints about using a mobile phone while driving, and the 20 complaints about traffic signal offences stand out.
The one-day operation began at 6.00 am and ended at 6.00pm on Monday. It was attended by members of the Road Accident Prevention Ulamos - OPO, members of the Special Motorcycle Ulamos - EOMO, as well as the Unit of the Traffic Department in Avdimou.
As part of the checks, seven persons who were found to be driving vehicles for which there was no valid certificate of suitability – MOTO were reported, two persons who were found to be driving vehicles without themselves being covered by a certificate of insurance of liability towards a third person were reported, while one person was terminated after he was found to be driving a vehicle without holding a driving license. Among the complaints made are 112 complaints about driving a vehicle for which there was no valid registration certificate.
A total of 326 traffic offences were detected and reported, and two investigated cases of drug-related driving were also investigated, following the positive preliminary drug test, which was subjected on two vehicle drivers.
The focus of the inspections was black and dangerous spots on the road network, with the emphasis on offences that were proven to be among the main causes of serious and fatal road collisions, such as exceeding the speed limit, failing to use a seat belt, and using a mobile phone while driving.
