The Department of Forests on Wednesday handed over a 13-metre-long fir trunk to the shipyard of small boats in Limassol (Karnagio), to replace the mast of the primordial experimental vessel "Kyrenia-Eleftheria", which is an effigy of the ancient Kyrenia ship.
The Department of Forests said in a statement with this move it responded to the request of the Kyrenia-Chrysokava Cultural Foundation.
"Kyrenia-Eleftheria", after its construction, has been involved in many experiments of maritime archaeology and took part in a large number of cultural and other activities and events, culminating in its monumental trip to Greece in 2004, on the occasion of the Olympic Games.

The forests and timber of Cyprus, says the Department of Forests, have been exploited by man since ancient times. They used them for various purposes, such as food preparation, heating, the manufacture of containers, tools and furniture, the construction of houses, the construction of ships, etc. Over time and with the change and use of various other methods and materials, the use of forests, especially in Cyprus, has been reduced to a minimum.
The Department of Forests tries through various actions and initiatives to highlight the value of the forest and its direct connection, over time, with man.
"We contribute in this way and in this way in practice to the continuation of traditional uses of timber, professions and arts of Cyprus. We wish you good trips to "Kyrenia-Eleftheria" and a short reunion with the primordial ship of Kyrenia", he concludes.
