 Filenews 2 February 2022

The vehicle traffic meter that was installed in the framework of the GEOSTARS project on the Karvounas – Troodos road gives us interesting data on the traffic to the Troodos National Forest Park, the Department of Forests said in a statement.

For 2021, the meter recorded a total of 341,056 vehicle crossings to and from Troodos, an increase of 13% compared to 2020 (302 373 transits) and a decrease of 10% compared to 2019 (377 281 transits).

The largest transit of vehicles was observed in the first and last month of the year, with the highest traffic amounting to 5323 crossings on Sunday, December 26, 2021. The average crossings for 2021 amounted to 934 vehicles per day, while on weekends and holidays it stood at 1,493 vehicles per day. By season, the average daily traffic observed in 2021 was: Winter 972, Spring 581, Summer 1,250 and Autumn 935 vehicles.

"Apart from its ecological value, these measurements prove once again the exceptional importance of the Troodos National Forest Park as a visited destination for recreation and are useful for the management of the Troodos National Forest Park in particular and the area of the Troodos Geopark in general," the same statement stressed.

The project entitled "Astro-observation and natural environment – an alternative product for the development and promotion of geoparks of the Eastern Mediterranean" with the acronym GEOSTARS http://geostars.eu/ is implemented within the framework of the Cooperation Program Interreg V-A Greece – Cyprus 2014-2020 and is co-funded by the European Union (E.T.P.A.) and national funds of Greece and Cyprus.

The meter was installed with the cooperation of the Department of Forests and the Department of Public Works and was incorporated into the traffic measurement system DIAVLOS of the Department of Public Works, which we thank for the cooperation.
