3,396 NEW CASES, TWO DEATHS - Monday 31 January

Two people have died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 733, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Health. At the same time, 3,396 (positivity rate: 2.47%) of new cases of COVID-19 were identified by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 256,746.

In total, 204 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 65 are in serious condition. 76.36% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.

Meanwhile, 20 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in a serious condition due to COVID in an Intensive Care Unit.

A total of 137,680 disease detection tests have been performed using the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 2 deaths announced with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19, concern:

- A man, aged 86, who died on January 31st at famagusta General Hospital.

- Woman, aged 77, who died on January 31st in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

As a result, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 733, of which:

  • 458 men (62.5%), and
  • 275 women (37.5%).

The average age of the deceased from the disease is 76.3 years.

B. Hospitalized:

In total, 204 covid-19 patients are hospitalized in the hospitals of the CySEC, of which 65 are in serious condition or in conditions of PPE.

Of the 65 patients who are in serious condition, 31 are intubated, 4 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit off the ventilator and 30 are in an Increased Care Unit.

C. Positive cases of COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 137,680 diagnoses performed, 7,025 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 130,655 by the antigen rapid test method, 3,396 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting as follows:

  • 38 cases from 247 samples taken through the process of contact tracing of already confirmed cases.
  • 54 cases from 3,911 samples taken in the context of passenger screening at Larnaka and Paphos Airports.
  • 307 cases from 2,275 samples taken through private initiative.
  • 42 cases from 334 samples taken from the Microbiology Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 1,853 cases from 68,222 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  • 1,096 cases from 62,433 samples examined by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health's program.
  • 6 cases from 258 samples taken in the framework of the referral program by Personal Doctors and control of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
