YELLOW WARNING FOR RAIN AND HEAVY THUNDERSTORMS

A yellow warning was issued Saturday afternoon by the Meteorological Service for strong thunderstorms.

In particular, prolonged rains and locally strong thunderstorms are expected to affect the region intermittently. The total rainfall is likely to exceed 55 mm in the 24 hours.

The warning will take effect from 14:00 on Sunday until 10:00 on Monday morning.

In detail the weather

Low barometric in the southern Ionian is moving slowly eastwards and will begin to affect the area by Sunday afternoon. Sparse dust will be observed in the atmosphere from time to time.

Tonight, the weather will be partly cloudy and locally mostly cloudy, while later in some areas of the interior and east beaches, sparse fog or even low clouds are expected to form. Winds will blow northeast to southeast, weak to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort and later on the windward coast to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will be a little turbulent to turbulent. The temperature will drop to 8 degrees in the interior, around 13 degrees on the coast and 3 degrees in the higher mountains, where locally frost is likely to form.

Sunday, the weather will initially be partly cloudy and at times cloudy, while isolated rains are expected to occur. In the afternoon, the weather will become mostly cloudy with local rains and isolated thunderstorms. The phenomena locally are likely to be prolonged or even intense. From late afternoon on the highest peaks of Troodos snowfall is expected. Winds will blow initially northeast to southeast, moderate to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort and later southeast to southwest strong to very strong, 5 to 6 Beaufort. The sea will initially be a little turbulent to turbulent. The temperature will rise to around 18 degrees in the interior and on the coast and around 9 degrees in the higher mountains.

Sunday night the weather will be mostly cloudy with rain and local thunderstorms. The phenomena locally are likely to be prolonged or even intense. In the higher mountains it is expected to snow at times. The winds will blow mainly southwest, moderate to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort, but on the windward coast very strong and transient to severe, 6 to 7 Beaufort. The sea will be turbulent to very wavy.

On Monday, the weather will be mostly cloudy, with rain expected in most areas, as well as isolated thunderstorms. Locally the phenomena are likely to be prolonged or even intense, especially after noon. In the higher mountains, snowfall or sleet is expected, while in the windy coast very strong southwest winds will blow. On Tuesday the weather will initially be mostly cloudy, with local rain or even isolated thunderstorms, as well as transient snowfall on the highest peaks of Troodos, but will later improve noticeably.

On Wednesday, the weather will be partly cloudy and intermittently cloudy and gradually local rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected from the west.

On Monday, temperatures will drop to near average climatic values, while a slight rise is expected on Tuesday. No significant change is expected on Wednesday.
