Clarifications on the non-supply of water to a residential complex in Chlorakas, where the majority of the refugees live, is announced by the Water Development Department, after the protest rally of a group of residents residing in the complex, outside the District Office of the TAU in Paphos, yesterday Monday.
The residents delivered to the Department a letter requesting the supply of water supply directly from the TAU and the implementation of Article 19 of the Unified Water Management Law.
For the above, and on the occasion of press reports, the Department clarifies the following:
1. On January 17, 2022, a group of residents residing in a residential complex in Chlorakas, held a meeting outside the District Office of the TAU in Paphos, delivering a letter requesting the supply of water supply directly from the TAU and the application of Article 19 of the Unified Water Management Law.
2. After examination of the request and investigation of all relevant parameters, it was found that the request cannot be satisfied, for the following reasons:
-The SOA has no infrastructure near this complex, so that it can apply Article 19 of the Unified Water Management Law. In addition, the article in question provides that the Director of the TAU may, in exceptional cases, make agreements for the supply of water intended for human consumption directly to authorised consumers, conditions that do not apply in this case.
- Based on the Communities Law and the Building Permit of the complex in question, its water supply falls within the competences of the Local Water Supply Authority, which in this case is the Community Council of Chlorakas. Due to large financial debts (from the purchase of water) of the owner company of the complex, the Community Council proceeded, in 2018, to the cut-off of the water supply and initiated legal proceedings for the repayment of the debt.
-Since then, the coverage of the water needs of the complex was made by the owner company in violation of the terms of the Building Permit and the legislation in general, since it is not an authorized water supplier.
According to the announcement, the TAU has already sent a reply letter to the affected residents, explaining the above.
