The Director of the Water Development Department, Panagiota Hadjigeorgiou, expressed her full satisfaction with the occupancy rates of the major dams in Cyprus, noting at the same time that this January is the third best of the decade.
Regarding the occupancy of the dams, Mrs. Hadjigeorgiou said that the inflow of water in the last twenty-four hours exceeded all expectations, reaching 6 million cubic meters and having already caused the overflow of the Dam of Pomos yesterday afternoon, while she added that if the rainfall continues at the same rate, the overflow of the Lefkara dam is expected by the end of the month, as well as that of Asprokremmos before the end of February.
As mentioned by the Director of the Water Development Department, the stored amount of water is currently at 70% of the total capacity of the reservoirs, a percentage that makes January this year the third best of the decade, while she noted that it is expected that it will soon to achieve a 75% occupancy rate, which will ensure full adequacy against the water supply needs for the current year.
When asked about any reports of faults or technical problems, Mrs. Hadjigeorgiou replied that there has been no problem so far, with the department's staff taking all necessary actions daily to ensure the smooth operation of the network.
